Carlisle Castle
Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, where Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed in 1568 after fleeing her rebellious subjects. Confined in various castles across England for the next 19 years, she was executed in 1587 by order of Elizabeth I, who feared that Mary was plotting with foreign enemies to usurp her.
