AGNES OF GOD

 "AGNES OF GOD"  (1985)

MY THOUGHTS: I love this film, and I love Anne Bancroft in it! I think she creates a multi-dimensional character, which people do not expect from a nun, not even the Mother Superior. But she is not your typical nun, in that she entered the convent after already having a full secular life. She had been a wife and a mother. She had lived in society freely, doing as she wished, before taking on the more structured and limited life, within the strict order she joined after her husband's death. It makes for very interesting interactions with Jane Fonda's character, which range from hunmorous to contentious. She seems quite protective of Sister Agnes and almost in awe of her "innocence," likening it to that of Saints who had come before her and stating she is a true gift from God. As the story unfolds, and secrets are revealed, you wait in anticipation of who will win the struggle for "control" of Sister Agnes's fate, and ultimately, her future. Is she an innocent? Is she more aware of her "sins" than she acknowledges? IS she a combination of the two? It is a fascinating case study, that pits a psychiatrist against a representative of the church, with both women wanting what is best for the young woman at the center of it all. It is an excellent movie, starring three actresses, who are all giving solid performances and make it more than worth watching!
SYNOPSIS: "Dr. Martha Livingston is a court-appointed psychiatrist sent to evaluate Sister Agnes, a young nun whose infant has been found strangled. With Agnes claiming a virgin conception and having no memory of giving birth, Livingston must distinguish between the lies and the nun's perception-altering faith. Complicating her investigation, Livingston continually clashes with the overbearing Mother Miriam Ruth, who insists that Livingston leave Agnes alone."
