Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was officially proclaimed Empress of India in an Imperial Durbar, or Coronation, on January 1st, 1877.
The Queen had previously been given the title by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in May 1876. This followed the U.K. Government transferring control of India from the East India Company to the British Crown.
Victoria was the first and only Empress Regnant of India. Her son (Edward VII), grandson (George V), and two great-grandsons (Edward VIII and George VI) served as Emperors of India after her.
King George VI, grandfather of King Charles III, was the last Emperor of India- the title was abolished on June 22nd, 1948, after the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which lead to India becoming an independent Republic.
