AUNTIE MAME

 "AUNTIE MAME" (1958)

This comedy is one of my favorite movies! It is completely entertaining in every way! It is based on the 1955 novel of the same name, by Edward Everett Tanner III (under the pseudonym Patrick Dennis) and its 1956 theatrical adaptation by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. This film version stars Rosalind Russell (who was wonderful in it) and it was directed by Morton DaCosta. It is NOT to be confused with a musical version of the same story, that appeared on Broadway in 1966, and was later made into a 1974 film, "Mame," starring Lucille Ball as the title character. It was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, 1 British Academy Film Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 1 Grammy Award and 4 Laurel Awards. It won 2 Golden Globes and 2 Laurel Awards. It is still a well-loved movie and entertaining for everyone. My favorite part has to be the entire "dinner scene" at the end of the film. It was just so wonderfully conceived and completed.
SYNOPSIS: "Mame Dennis (Rosalind Russell), a progressive and independent woman of the 1920s, is left to care for her nephew Patrick (Jan Handzlik/Roger Smith) after his wealthy father dies. Mr. Babcock (Fred Clark), Patrick's assigned executor, objects to Mame's unconventional way of living and tries to force her to send Patrick to prep school. As Mame and Patrick grow closer, Mr. Babcock tries to discipline Patrick and threatens to separate the two if Mame does not comply with his wishes."
