SYNOPSIS:
"Bittersweet film about a supply officer aboard a decrepit cargo ship during World War II who yearns for a transfer into a combat zone but is thwarted by the ship's captain, a petty tyrant. Forced to endure various humiliations in exchange for privileges, the crew engage in minor acts of resistance, and look to Mr. Roberts for inspiration and moral support. Based on the hit Broadway play."

Henry Fonda, Jaes Cagney, Jack Lemmon, William Powell, Betsy Palmer, Ward Bond, Ken Curtis, Philip Carey and Nick Adams.

SCREENPLAY:
Frank S. Nugent and Joshua Logan; based on "Mister Roberts" (1946 novel) by Thomas Heggen; and "Mister Roberts" (1948 play)
by Thomas Heggen and Joshua Logan.

DIRECTOR:
John Ford, Mervyn LeRoy and Joshua Logan (uncredited).

AWARDS & OTHER HONORS:
It was nominated for three (3) Academy Awards and won one (1) for:
"Best Supporting Actor" --- Jack Lemmon

It was nominated for three (3) additional awards, by various entities, and won two (2) of them.

"Mister Roberts "was followed by a film sequel, "Ensign Pulver" (1964), with Robert Walker Jr. starring as Pulver. It also starred Burl Ives as Captain Morton, Walter Matthau as Doc, and in small roles, Larry Hagman and Jack Nicholson, among others. Much of the screenplay was derived from Heggen's original book.
