Robert Morley

British actor Robert Morley as “King Louis XVI” in W.S. Van Dyke’s historical drama movie for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, ‘Marie Antoinette” (1938), also starring Norma Shearer in the title roll, and also starring Tyrone Power, John Barrymore, Anita Louise, Joseph Schildkraut, Gladys George, Henry Stephenson, Cora Witherspoon, and Henry Daniell. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this performance. A few years later he appeared in the British movie, Gabriel Pascal’s adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Major Barbara’, also starring Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison, and Sybil Thorndike. He also appeared in John Harlow’s British war film ‘This Was Paris’ (1942), with Ann Dvorak and Ben Lyons, in Carol Reed’s British biographical film ‘The Young Mr. Pitt’ (1942), also starring Robert Donat and Phyllis Calvert, Bernon Sewell’s British comedy ‘The Ghosts of Berkeley Square’ (1947), also starring Felix Aylmer, Carol Reed’s British adventure drama ‘Outcast of the Islands’ (1951), also starring Trevor Howard, Ralph Richardson, and Wendy Hiller, and then he played Katharine Hepburn’s brother in John Huston’s classic adventure movie adaptation of C.S. Forester’s ’The African Queen’ (1952), also starring Humphrey Bogart. My favourite Robert Morley performance is as “Max Vandeveer” in Ted Kotcheff’s black comedy “Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe” (1978), also starring George Segal, Jacqueline Bisset, and Philippe Noiret. Remembering the late, great Robert Morley (26th May, 1998 - 3rd of June, 1992).
