Clive Brook


Marlene Dietrich and co-star British actor Clive Brook in Josef von Sternberg’s Pre-Code romantic drama for Paramount Pictures ‘Shanghai Express’ (1932), also starring Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Eugene Pallette, and Louise Closser Hale. Clive Brook began appearing in movies in Great Britain, then moved to Hollywood in 1924 where he became a major star with Paramount Pictures, during the silent era, and then continued to perform in leading roles in Hollywood movies through the Pre-Code era. He then returned to Great Britain in 1935 where he continued to act in movies for another decade. In Hollywood he played the leading man opposite leading ladies Mary Astor, Myrna Loy, Pola Negri, Clara Bow, Billie Dove, Olga Baclanova, Fay Wray, Ruth Chatterton, Kay Francis, Ann Harding, Tallulah Bankhead, Jean Arthur, Miriam Hopkins, Claudette Colbert, Frances Dee, Irene Dunne, Joan Blondell, and Madeleine Carroll, and he also appeared in movies with actors William Powell, Paul Lukas, Conrad Nagel, Reginald Owen, and George Raft. He appeared in Frank Lloyd’s Pre-code adaptation of Noël Coward’s play ‘Cavalcade’ (1933), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and also starred Diana Wynyard, Una O’Connor, and Beryl Mercer.
