HALO CLOUD RING GLOWS ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN
HALO CLOUD RING GLOWS ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN
A perfectly smooth, lens-shaped cloud sits over the snowy peak while soft rainbow bands arc across the sky above it. This kind of formation is known as a lenticular cloud, created when strong winds flow over mountains and the air oscillates in waves. Moisture condenses at the crest of those waves, forming the stacked, UFO-like shape.
The glowing ring effect and faint color bands happen when sunlight passes through tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the cloud, producing iridescence .. a real atmospheric optics effect that can paint clouds with pastel rainbow hues.
Moments like this are rare and short-lived, which is why they often look almost unreal in photos.
