 Ancient stones stood beneath a sky filled with shifting color 

High above the quiet Salisbury Plain, shimmering ribbons of light appeared to extend across the sky in flowing bands. The scene felt almost unreal .. Stonehenge framed beneath patterns of color high in the atmosphere.

In reality, displays like this occur when charged particles from the Sun collide with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere, producing auroras. They’re usually seen much farther north, but during strong geomagnetic activity, the lights can reach unusually far south .. briefly placing historic landscapes beneath vivid atmospheric displays.
