A massive rotating storm towers over open farmland while twin rainbows arc across the horizon and lightning flashes within the dark core in the distance. The straight country road stretches toward the center of the system, where sunlight, rain, and strong updrafts overlap in a single dramatic scene.

Scenes like this can occur when a powerful supercell thunderstorm develops. Rain falling on the sunlit side creates rainbows, while the storm’s rotating updraft (a mesocyclone) can produce tornadoes and intense lightning. The contrast between bright light and severe weather can make the sky look almost unreal .. but it’s all physics, moisture, and atmospheric instability at work.
