The Midnight Lady
"The Midnight Lady" directed by Richard Thorpe, written by Edward T. Lowe Jr.
Sarah Padden, John Darrow, Claudia Dell, Theodore von Eltz, Montague Love, Lucy Beaumont, Lina Basquette, Donald Keith, Brandon Hurst, Wayne Lamont
Sara Padden is the owner of a speakeasy, and she is kind to John Darrow who defends Claudia Dell's name while at her club. He later brings Dell to the club, but she is also involved with Theodore von Eltz whose reputation is not good. It becomes a potboiler along the lines of a poverty row "Madame X" with Padden taking the murder rap for Dell and guess who is the real mother of Dell and her brother turns out to be? You guessed it! This is a Chesterfield picture filmed at Universal City. The print is not too bad, and it is a fun little film about a nice self-sacrificing lady. John Darrow, Sara Padden, and Claudia Dell are all good. Interesting that the brother is played by Donald Keith who impressed me with his performance in "The Plastic Age", a 1925 film with Clara Bow and Gilbert Roland. His role is significant but small here.
Claudia Dell, Sara Padden, John Darrow
