MY THOUGHTS:
Before I mention anything else, I must mention that this movie has a VERY long running time. Now, I am NOT mentioning it, because it is not worth the time investment. Just the opposite. To make sure you really enjoy what the film as to offer, allow yourself the time needed, and take it all in. You will be glad you did, as it is truly a wonderful film. It was adapted from "Madame Bovary", and it is a story about love, betrayal, patriotism, loyalty, conflict and forgiveness. It is very well-written, well-acted and was filmed on location in Ireland.
SYNOPSIS:
"Epic drama of love and scandal set in a small village on the West Coast of Ireland during World War One. Trapped in a loveless marriage to a schoolteacher, Rosy Ryan embarks on a passionate affair with a British soldier, but the village idiot unwittingly proves the undoing of the couple."
STARRING:
Sarah Miles, Robert Mitchum, Christopher Jones, John Mills, Trevor Howard and Leo McKern.
SCREENPLAY:
Robert Bolt, as adapted from the novel "Madame Bovary."

ACADEMY AWARDS:
It was nominated for 4 awards and won 2, for: "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" (John Mills) and "Best Cinematography" (Freddie Young).

The film is recognized by American Film Institute on the
"2005: AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores" list.
