Ona Munson

Today, we honor the memory of actress Ona Munson (August 16, 1903 – February 11, 1955), whose talent and presence left a lasting mark on classic Hollywood cinema.

Munson is best remembered for her memorable portrayal of Belle Watling, the kind-hearted madam in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind. Her nuanced performance brought depth and sympathy to the character, standing out alongside Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler and leaving an enduring impression on audiences worldwide.

Munson struggled with depression throughout her life. On February 11, 1955, she tragically ended her life, leaving a note by her bedside: “This is the only way I know to be free again... Please don't follow me.” A bottle of sleeping pills was found beside her. She rests at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, Westchester County, New York. Ona Munson’s legacy continues to be celebrated by film historians and classic movie lovers.
