Everyone loves to say “enjoy it

Everyone loves to say “enjoy it, these are the best years,” like that’s supposed to somehow erase the exhaustion, the loneliness, the days that feel like they’re never going to end.

What I wish someone had told me is that not every season of motherhood will feel like magic. Some days will take everything out of you. Some nights will end in tears. And that’s okay.

Loving your child with everything you have doesn’t mean you have to love every single part of motherhood. It doesn’t mean you have to cherish every sleepless night, every tantrum, every stretch of loneliness that makes you question who you even are anymore.

You’re still a good mom. Even on the days you don’t want to be in the thick of it. Even when you’re counting down to bedtime.

This is a hard, beautiful, messy, soul-stretching thing. And it’s okay if you don’t love every piece of it.
