He is most often remembered for his roles in Howard Hawks' ‘Red River’ (1948), also starring John Wayne, Walter Brennan, and Joanne Dru, in George Stevens's ‘A Place in the Sun’ (1951), also starring Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters, in Fred Zinnemann's ‘From Here to Eternity’ (1953), also starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra, in Stanley Kramer's ‘Judgment at Nuremberg’ (1961), also starring Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Maximilian Schell, Wenerer Klemperer, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, and William Shatner, and in John Huston's ‘The Misfits’ (1961), also starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Thelma Ritter, and Eli Wallach.
