The wedding reception of Mary I and Phillip took place at Wolvesey castle

The wedding reception of Mary I and Phillip took place at Wolvesey castle.

There were 140 guests invited, but the groom and the bride chose to stay separated at their own table, alone.

After the wedding and dancing, the royal couple took their leave. As they walked towards the marriage bedroom, Mary must have been filled with nervous excitement and anticipation about what was going to happen, and Philip probably resigned with the prospect of performing his duty.

Their matrimonial bed was blessed by Stephen Gardiner. Then they were left alone.

What happened that night, only they knew, but the groom was up at 7 am. in the morning and heard mass as usual.

The act of consummation had evidently lived down to his expectations though, as he later confessed to ambassador Gomez.

The next couple of days, Mary remained in her chamber .

The fact that her husband was absolutely not attracted to her was obvious to everyone except her.

Even Cardinal Pole confessed that

" Philip is her spouse but treats her so deferentially as to appear her son . "
