April 15th 1945

On April 15th 1945, British, Canadian and American troops reached the gates of Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. They found over 13,000 bodies simply left on the ground. They found over 60,000 desperately ill prisoners simply wandering around aimlessly - most had not had anything to eat or drink for days, if not weeks.

By the time the allied troops arrived, a combination of starvation and typhus meant that prisoners were dying at the rate of around 500 a day. Sadly for Anne Frank and so many others, the liberation came too late.
