Helen Gahagan as “She” in the Merian C. Cooper production for RKO Radio Pictures, Lansing C. Holden’s and Irving Pichel’s adventure fantasy movie adaptation of H. Rider Haggard’s 1887 novel ‘She’ (1935), also starring Randolph Scott, Nigel Bruce, Helen Mack, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Lumsden Hare, Samuel S. Hinds, and Noble Johnson. It is said that Helen Gahagan’s portrayal of the villain “She” in this movie was Walt Disney’s inspiration, especially visually, of the “Evil Queen” in the Walt Disney Studio’s full length animated feature ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ (1937). The movie’s producer, Merian C. Cooper, was previously renowned for producing the classic movie ‘King Kong’ (1933). Helen Gahagan Douglas was married to suave Hollywood leading man Melvyn Douglas, who was famous later in life for winning the “triple crown of acting”, an Academy Award, an Emmy, and a Tony. Helen Gahagan Douglas, would also, later in life, serve as a Democratic Congresswoman from California, and later run for the Senate from California and famously lose to future President Richard Nixon.
