Gloria Swanson

Silent film star Gloria Swanson in publicity for the 1922 film MY AMERICAN WIFE. She was born Gloria May Josephine Svensson in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1899. During her heyday, audiences went to see her films not only for her performances, but also for her wardrobe. Swanson was frequently ornamented with beads, jewels, peacock and ostrich feathers and other extravagant pieces of haute couture. Her fashion, hair styles, and jewels were copied around the world. Film credits include "Male and Female" (1919), "Why Change Your Wife?" (1920), "The Affairs of Anatol" (1921), "Sadie Thompson" (1928), and a major comeback portraying a faded silent star Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950). The movie was a box office smash and earned her a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for an Academy Award. After a few more films in the 1950s, Swanson more or less retired. Throughout the 1960s, she appeared mostly on television and her last fling with the silver screen was in "Airport 1975" (1974), wherein she played herself. Swanson passed away on April 4, 1983, in New York City at the age of 84. 🙏🏻✨
