Jane Seymour

The Imperial Ambassador Eustace Chapuys described Jane Seymour as "no great beauty". But what she may have lacked in looks, she made up for in jewellery. We can see this in her famed portrait by Holbein; in it, she is wearing some of the most fabulous pieces from the queen’s jewel collection. Probably some of her jewellery came from her predecessors; we know that Catherine Howard would later wear some pieces that had belonged to Jane. In her portrait, she wears pearls and diamonds in gold on her headdress that match those around her neck, her waist, and the border of her square neckline. Jane’s inventory listed many jewelled buttons, and we can see some of them in her portrait, pinning her sleeves together. She also owned over 50 pairs of gold and pearl beads the description of which match some of those that hang from her waist. In her portrait, she wears a lavishly extravagant ouche, a pendant set with jewels that hangs down from her necklace; it is later seen on Catherine Howard in her portrait. This means this was a high-value piece that was not repurposed after Jane and kept in its original state. Jane’s portrait shows a Queen Consort who wanted to impress with her magnificence.
