Bretesche Castle

Bretesche Castle is a medieval building built in the 14th century, rebuilt in the 19th century and located in the commune of Missillac, in the French department of the Loire-Atlantique.
The castle was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. Its name derives from the low Latin brittisca "British [fortification]" then "parapet" in the 10th century and features a defense tower overlooking the main gate of a castle. At the time, it was an outpost for the city of La Roche-Bernard within the Duchy of Brittany. It besieged in the 16th century by the Duke of Mercoeur, governor of Britain during the Wars of Religion, then sacked and burned in 1793 during the French Revolution. The reconstruction began in the 19th century by Jacques Perron.
In 1847, the Château de la Bretesche was bought by Jacques Perron from the de Montaigu family, whose members succeeded one another for forty-five years as mayors of the city of Missillac in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was the Marquis de Montaigu who, in 1847, undertook the restructuring and total restoration of the castle. DelleNovembre 1847, with the Nantes architects Boismen and Le Diberder, harmoniously combines Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles on plans validated by Violet-le-Duc. His son, Pierre, marrying a daughter of the powerful Wendel family of industrialists, uses the income his wife receives each year to complete the work.
In 1926 the castle was classified as a historical monument and in 1943 the surroundings of the site were classified.
In 1965 the castle was sold to a real estate company. Shortly thereafter it was divided into apartments which were sold separately to private individuals. Its outbuildings are transformed into a hotel-restaurant and its park into a golf course. La Bretesche Domaine includes a luxury hotel in 15th-century outbuildings, an 18-hole golf course that winds through a 200-hectare park, a Michelin-star restaurant and a spa. The hotel and golf facilities are owned by the Bessé Signature group.
