The Knights Templar
KNIGHTS TEMPLAR TUNNEL
.
An ancient tunnel built by The Knights Templar, was lost and forgotten, in the 13th Century.
700 years later, in 1994, the tunnel was rediscovered ~ by a woman battling a clogged sewage pipe, underneath her house!
The tunnel was built by the Knights Templar, when the town was under the rule of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
It was used as a strategic passage way, connecting the Templar palace with the port.
The Templar Tunnel was lost, after Acre fell to the Mamluks, in the 13th century.
The tunnel is 150 meters long, and extends from the Templars’ fortress in the west to the city’s port in the east.
It served as a strategic underground passageway that connected the palace to the port.
The lower part of the tunnel is carved in natural stone, and its upper part is a semi-barreled dome made of hewn stone.
It is one of Acre’s most visited sites, with an underground stream, and impressive domed ceiling.
The main fortress of the Templar order, on the western edge of the tunnel, was the strongest in the city.
Its entrance was protected by two imposing towers, with 28-foot thick walls.
Two smaller towers were built on either side of the main towers, and each was topped with a gilded lion.
Sadly, this fortress is no longer in existence, only the tunnel remains.
