THE WILD BUNCH
"THE WILD BUNCH" --- This 1969 Western is a part of the National Film Registry. It boasts a very talented cast, which includes William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. I am not a big fan of Westerns, although I will watch certain ones from time to time. This film is noted for intricate, multi-angle, quick-cut editing using normal and slow-motion images, a revolutionary cinema technique in 1969. The film was controversial because of its graphic violence and its portrayal of crude men attempting to survive by any available means. The film was ranked 80th in the American Film Institute's 100 best American films and the 69th most thrilling film. In 2008, the AFI listed 10 best films in 10 genres and ranked The Wild Bunch as the sixth-best Western. It is one that fans of Westerns will love! Currently it is not available for streaming, but you can rent it from a couple of different sites.
SYNOPSIS: "In this gritty Western classic, aging outlaw Pike Bishop (William Holden) prepares to retire after one final robbery. Joined by his gang, which includes Dutch Engstrom (Ernest Borgnine) and brothers Lyle (Warren Oates) and Tector Gorch (Ben Johnson), Bishop discovers the heist is a setup orchestrated in part by his old partner, Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan). As the remaining gang takes refuge in Mexican territory, Thornton trails them, resulting in fierce gunfights with plenty of casualties."
