King Edward IV
King Edward IV is victorious at the Battle of Tewkesbury.
Considered one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Tewkesbury took place on May 4, 1471. It claimed the life of three main Lancastrian leaders: Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset; John Courtenay, Earl of Devon, and John, Baron Wenlock.
The battle also claimed the life of Edward of Westminster, the 17-year-old Prince of Wales and son of King Henry VI.
Shortly after the battle, King Henry VI died a prisoner in the Tower of London. Some believe he was murdered at the hands of Richard of Gloucester (later King Richard III), brother of King Edward IV.
Richard then went on to marry Anne Neville, Princess of Wales, Edward of Westminster’s widow.
