Boken Lullaby

Phillips Holmes, Louise Carter, Nancy Carroll, Lionel Barrymore 1932 "Boken Lullaby" directed by Ernst Lubitsch

I saw this film a few years ago and I was mesmerized by it and when it was over, I said out loud to no one, as I was alone, "I've just seen the most beautiful film ever made." I've resisted watching it again for fear that I would find that I was mistaken. I just watched it again at last and I don't feel that I was in error at all. In fact, it brought tears to my eyes. Okay, I wept because the message is true as are the performances and the direction. I don't know why this film is not as well-known as Lubitsch's other sound films from the thirties. The other performances, by Lucien Littlefield, Tom Douglas, Emma Dunn, Frank Sheridan, George Bickel, Zasu Pitts, and Rod McLennan, are all excellent. I cannot recommend this film highly enough.
