Byzantines
A great image of Byzantine Cataphracts ca. 5th-6th Century onwards, the foot soldiers are cornuti seniores (Western Troops) on the way to the East to assist the Cornuti Ioniores (Eastern Troops) to help guard the Porta Aurea at Constantinople due to the disastrous Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD and then to help with the Magister Militum Praesentalis of the East. The Cataphracts were the elite Cavavalry force of the The Roman Empire (Byzantines - you all know I don't like that term but I will use it for ease of simplicity) they are heavy cavalry warriors, both horse and rider covered in Segmentata or Hamata protection, and wielded Heavy lance, sword, shield and bow and quiver. If unmounted, they were lethaly effective on foot as well. They were the "special forces" of the Byzantines.
