Crime and Punishment
"Crime and Punishment" 1935 directed by Josef von Sternberg and written by Joesph Allen and S.K. Lauren adapted on the novel by Fydor Dostoevsky for Columbia Pictures.
Peter Lorre, Edward Arnold, Marian Marsh, Tala Birell, Elizabeth Risdon, Robert Allen, Douglas Dumbrille, Gene Lockhart, Johnny Allen, Mrs. Patrick Campbell.
Gorgeous to look at as von Sternberg was great at compositions in black and white. I marveled at the various shots, and he knew how to light shots brilliantly. The scenes with the staircase were similar to his work in "Thunderbolt" in 1929. Still the tension between Peter Lorre and Edward Arnold became a bit weary and while Marian Marsh remained sympathetic, Tala Birell and Elizabeth Risdon gave in to overacting. The task of adapting a big novel like this into a film under two hours didn't really work.
"Josef von Sternberg was contractually obligated to make this film, and he disliked it, saying in his autobiography that it was "no more related to the true text of the novel than the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gower is related to the Russian environment.""
