Louis Jourdan


 Today we remember Louis Jourdan, the French-born actor whose charm, versatility, and elegance made him a beloved figure in classic cinema. Born Louis Gendre, he traveled extensively during his youth, studying in England and Turkey, and later honed his craft under the mentorship of René Simon at France’s Ecole Dramatique. During World War II, he bravely served with the French Underground before pursuing a film career that would span decades.

Jourdan first gained international attention in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Paradine Case (1947) and continued to impress in Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) and Three Coins in the Fountain (1954). On Broadway, he starred in The Immoralist (1954) alongside James Dean. His most celebrated role came as the charming yet conflicted 'Gaston Lachaille' in Vincente Minnelli’s Gigi (1958), earning him a Golden Globe nomination. Jourdan also delivered memorable performances in Can-Can (1960), Julie (1956), and later as 'Kamal,' a Bond villain in Octopussy (1983).

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1960, Louis Jourdan’s elegance, range, and charisma continue to inspire audiences around the world.
