Medieval times
In Medieval times, animals who were deemed to have committed crimes, were put on trial.......
Animal trials were surprisingly common in medieval Europe.
Animals didn't go to a special 'animal court' either, instead, they faced a judge, prosecutors, and witnesses.
Animals even got a defense attorney, during these infamous trials.
Horses, pigs, dogs, and cows went on trial for crimes like murder, assault, and even bestiality.
In 1457, a sow and her piglets went on trial in France.
Their crime: attacking and taking the life of a French child.
The pigs defense attorney, successfully raised doubt about whether the piglets had attacked the boy.
Unfortunately, the judge ruled that the sow was guilty and gave her a capital sentence.
Her piglets got off with a warning......
