Helen Twelvetrees
Helen Twelvetrees, born Helen Marie Jurgens in Brooklyn, NY, December 25, 1908-February 13, 1958, Middletown, PA by suicide overdose of sedatives. She was married to LeRoy Twelvetrees from 1927-1930, to Jack Woody from 1931-1936, and they had a son, and she was also married to Conrad Ralph Payne from 1947 to her death. She began in films in 1929 coming from the stage. She was said to have the saddest eyes in Hollywood, and she knew how to use them effectively onscreen. Helen made 32 films with her last being in 1939. She was most successful in the pre-Code era with several gritty films including "Her Man" 1930 with Ricardo Cortez and Phillips Holmes, and "Panama Flo" 1932 with Charles Bickford and Robert Armstrong, and "Unashamed" 1932 with Monroe Owsley.
