What about Crazy Jim?
What about Crazy Jim?
The late Logan County attorney and family historian, Coleman Alderson Hatfield, the son of Cap and Nan Hatfield, referred to Uncle Jim Vance as "Crazy Jim” in one of his writings; and he also explained that Jim Vance, the maternal uncle of Anse Hatfield, was afflicted with lateral nystagmus. At another time, he further elaborated about Jim Vance ‘s condition and said, “In times of impending combat, when men face each other with hands moving toward the holster, old Jim never backed down. His rolling eyes made his enemies quail in his presence ..."
Coleman Alderson clarified that the occasional nickname "Crazy Jim" was not pertaining to his mental or emotional state, but rather from Jim Vance's unusual appearance—specifically from his rolling eyes.
Coleman Alderson, and his son, Coleman C. Hatfield, also called him Uncle Jim, Old Jim, or Bad Jim in other writings.
Apparently, the nickname "Crazy Jim" was occasionally used during his lifetime, and was accepted (or at least tolerated) among his immediate family.
