Brattle Street
This house on Brattle Street in Cambridge, Mass was built in 1759, and from 1775 to 1776 it was used by George Washington as his residence and headquarters during the Siege of Boston. Many years later, it was owned by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who wrote most of his books and poems here, while also entertaining guests such as Charles Sumner, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Charles Dickens.
The first photo was taken during the 1890s, only a decade or so after his death, and today it remains well-preserved, with hardly any changes to this exterior view. It is now owned by the National Park Service and is open to the public as the Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site.
