Hermione Gingold
The late, great British actress Hermione Gingold appeared in movies from the Pre-Code era in 1931 in Great Britain until her last movie in Hollywood in the 1980's, Sidney Lumet's 'Garbo Talks' (1984) also starring Anne Bancroft, Ron Silver, Carrie Fisher, Catherine Hicks, Steven Hill, Mary McDonnell (in her first film), Howard Da Silva, and with cameo appearances by Betty Comden and Greta Garbo herself. Hermione Gingold appears in this photograph in Vincente Minnelli's 'Gigi' (1958) also starring Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdain, Maurice Chevalier, Eva Gabor, and Jacques Bergerac. That same year Ms. Gingold starred in Richard Quine's 'Bell, Book, and Candle' (1958) also starring Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak, Elsa Lanchester, Janice Rule, Jack Lemmon, and Ernie Kovacs. She later starred in Michael Anderson's British-American thriller 'The Naked Edge' (1961) also starring Gary Cooper, Deborah Kerr, and Michael Wilding, Morton DaCosta's musical 'The Music Man' (1962) also starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Ron Howard, and Buddy Hackett, and Harold Prince's musical 'A Little Night Music' (1978) also starring Elizabeth Taylor, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down, and Diana Rigg. Her first movie appearance was in Anthony Asquith's British drama 'Dance Pretty Lady' (1931) also starring Flora Robson, Ann Casson, Carl Harbord, Michael Hogan, and Moore Marriott, and her second movie was Marcel Vernal's British musical 'Public Nuisance No. 1' (1936) also starring Frances Day and Arthur Riscoe. Remembering Ms. Gingold (8th December, 1887 - 24th May, 1987) who passed away on this day, 24th May, in 1987, at the age of 89. Aside from her movies, her appearances on the television talk show programmes 'The Tonight Show', with Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, and 'The Merv Griffin Show', are legendary.
