Beatrice Lillie
Canadian / British screen star and comedienne Beatrice Lillie in Hamilton MacFadden’s Pre-Code Hollywood comedy movie ‘Are You There?’ (1931), also starring British actor John Garrick, and Russian actress Olga Baclanova, “The Russian Tigress”, famous for appearing alongside Conrad Veidt in Paul Leni’s ‘The Man Who Laughs’ (1928), and also for playing “Cleopatra” in Tod Browning’s Pre-Code cult classic ‘Freaks’ (1932). Beatrice Lillie first gained stardom on the London West End stages and later was renowned for appearing in André Charlot revues, and for her associations with Cole Porter and Noël Coward, and for appearing with Gertrude Lawrence, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. The last movies that she appeared in were Michael Anderson’s ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ (1956), also starring British actor David Niven and Shirley MacLaine, and in George Roy Hill’s ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ (1967), also starring British actress Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, James Fox, John Gavin, and Carol Channing.
