Robert Edward "Bob" Crane
Robert Edward "Bob" Crane (July 13, 1928 – June 29, 1978)He was best known for his performance as Colonel Robert E. Hogan in Hogan's Heroes. The series aired from 1965 to 1971, and Crane received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work on the series. After the series ended, however, it was difficult for Crane to find work in Hollywood and he moved into dinner theater. In 1978, he was found murdered in a Scottsdale apartment he was living in, in a very grizzly manner. Crane had been bludgeoned to death with a weapon that was never found, though investigators believed it to be a camera tripod. An electrical cord had also been tied around his neck. As it turned out, the former Hogan's Heroes star had been frequenting Hollywood's world of strip clubs, began picking up women for sex, and filming amateur pornography.
In light of this, the police had an endless list of possible suspects and motives for Crane's death. To date, however, only one person has been tried in this case, Crane's one time friend John Carpenter (who helped Bob film his sexual escapades), he was acquitted of murder in 1994. Crane was married twice, the second marriage was to his former Hogan's Heroes co-star Sigrid Valdis. Bob Crane is buried at Westwood Memorial Park.
