Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
This is a classic, cult, fantasy, holiday film.
A must see.
Much has been written about it. Danny Peary, notably emphasizes that other than the two villains, a drunk Santa and a neurotic psychologist, people do the right things for the wrong reasons (most are selfish yet still do altruistic things.)
What else is there to say?
Well, for one, we can question if this is really a fantasy. There is not a single supernatural 'miracle' that could not have a logical, earthly, realistic explanation.
The main problem with the characterization I have is that Kris lives in a home for the aged.
Does this not indicate that he is simply a deluded old man?
If Kris really is the true Santa, what exactly is this supposed to entail? Kris* is clearly not Nicholas of Myra (though the bop on the psychologists' head does recall Nicholas' passionate argument at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea!)
Kris claims to be the Clement Moore Santa, with the particularly named reindeer. (If he lives at this home for the aged, where are his reindeer?) He is not even an updated, urban, modern Santa as in the 1991, Raymond Briggs, animated Father Christmas (which I think should work perfectly well.)
He claims to be busy on Christmas Eve, so, what is it that he is supposed to be doing then? In this modern age where parents shop for and provide the gifts, is that supposed to be his job?
Is Kris, instead, a particular embodiment of the Christmas Spirit (particular to this place and time) somewhat as explained in The Santa Clause? There are no clues that this might be the case... But why not? Not anything else makes much sense.
It's rather simpler to believe that Kris is not Santa (sacrilege! Of course Kris is the real Santa,) than to believe that he is.
Enough of that, however.
Other than the issue of reality vs fantasy, the film remains incredibly insightful on the workings of governments and courts.
If Kris is not Santa, it's ultimately irrelevant: The movie, the court, society decides that it is to be. He is Santa.
Case closed.
Incredible to think that even today, courts and politicians accept fictions (religious, pseudo-scientific, whatever) for the sake of obtaining votes and for the sake of keeping certain people in office or in power.
How is that a fantasy?
We still do this today!
Truth, due to politics, becomes a matter of opinion!
If we didn't have a Santa, the courts would create one.
What else would we create if we didn't have it?
The films sets up the resolution rather nicely (first the DA then the judge accept things they really should not.) The case could have been appealed... But why? It would be in no one's interests to do so.
A very funny film.
Yeah. Yeah. This is a classic, cult, fantasy, holiday film.
A must see.
I can't believe you haven't seen it.
SEE IT.
*Even the name is problematic. Kris Kringle is not a name, but rather a corruption of one, that of the actual Baby Jesus.
