Joseph Diaz Gergonne
May 4, 1859: French mathematician and philosopher Joseph Diaz Gergonne died in Montpellier. Born in Nancy, he enlisted in the French army in 1791 as a captain and served honorably for four years before transitioning to civilian life in 1795, taking up the chair of "transcendental mathematics" at the new École centrale. In 1810, in response to difficulties he encountered in trying to publish his work, he founded his own mathematics journal which, over a period of twenty-two years, published about two hundred articles by Gergonne himself as well as other articles by many distinguished mathematicians. He was appointed to the chair of astronomy at the University of Montpellier in 1816, and in 1830 he was appointed Rector of the University of Montpellier.
