Pickering House

The Pickering House on Broad Street in Salem, Massachusetts, shown here around 1906 and 2017, is one of the oldest surviving houses in the state, although its exterior has been heavily altered over the years.
It was built around 1664 by John Pickering, and was occupied by his descendants for more than 300 years, until 1998. It was also the birthplace of Timothy Pickering, who served as Postmaster General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State under George Washington.
The house is now preserved as a museum, and its current exterior appearance dates back to the 1840s, when Timothy Pickering’s son John remodeled it with a Gothic Revival design.
