Wendy Barrie

Wendy Barrie was born in 1912 in Hong Kong to an English-Irish father and a Russian Jewish mother and was educated in a convent school. After working in beauty parlors, she was cast in "Wonder Bar" in 1930 at the London Savoy Theatre and while lunching at the Savoy Grill, she was discovered by Alexander Korda who cast her as Jane Seymour in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" in 1933. The next year she was in Hollywood and was working steadily in films at Paramount, Universal, and RKO. She had a gritty role in "Dead End" 1937 and was cast in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" 1939 and was in "Five Came Back" 1939. Her real life association with gangster Bugsy Siegel hurt her career by the late 40s but televison brought new success as a talk show host on "Picture This" 1948. In the mid 70s, Barrie suffered a stroke leaving her impaired and she died in a nursing home in Englewood, NJ in 1978 aged 65.
