MANDAN DANCER
MANDAN DANCER:
In what resembles half afro/half dreadlocks, this Mandan man is prepared for the Buffalo Dance. The Mandans are quiet on the pages of Indian Wars texts, compared to their Plains neighbors the Lakotas, Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Arapaho, Comanche, Crow and others. If you heard of Native Americans with blue eyes and fair skin, they are probably talking about some Mandan tribe members.. They had close contact with the Vikings during their campaign here. While the above mentioned tribes blazed a path to glory in battlefield exploits, the Mandans maintained a low profile as traders. They operated what would later become 'trading posts' on the Plains. The great market outlet for agriculture and related items, were available to all tribes on the Plains through the Mandan infrastructure.
