The Daria-i-Noor - The Sea Of Light
.
The Daria-i-Noor 'Sea of Light' is one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, weighing an estimated 182 carats.
It's pale pink colour, is one of the rarest to be found in diamonds.
The gem was extracted from the Golconde mine in India.
Research carried out on the crown jewels in 1965, discovered that the diamond was originally part of a much larger pink diamond.
This large diamond was originally mounted on the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan’s throne, in 1642.
The diamond was cut into two, with the largest part becoming the Daria-i-Noor.
The smaller part became the Noor-ol-Ein, which is currently mounted in a tiara, that is part of the Iranian Crown Jewels.
The Daria-i-Noor was owned by the Mogul emperors until 1739.
In that year, Shah Nadir invaded India and took possession of the Mogul treasure, including the Daria-i-Noor.
The treasure was then taken to Persia, where the diamond passed from one dynasty to another.
After the annexation of the Sikh Empire, the diamond was acquired by the British.
The Daria-i-Noor would make its way to London, however, two years later it was shipped back to India.
Here it was auctioned off, with the Nawabs of Dhaka being the winning bidder.
In 1840, the diamond was valued at 63,000 rupees, the equivalent of £6,000 - which would convert to more than £100 million (in 2012)
Today, the Daria-i-Noor is estimated to be worth over $20 billion - although its true value is considered priceless, due to its historical significance and rarity.
The diamond is currently in the Iranian National Jewels collection, of the Central Bank of Iran in Tehran.
However, another theory says that it is currently in a private collection, within Bangladesh......
