"House of Bamboo" (1955)

An unusual entry in the 50's Noir genre. "House of Bamboo" (1955) stars two famous Roberts: Robert Ryan and Robert Stack. Stack is an American Military undercover agent who assumes another soldier's identity in order to penetrate a criminal enterprise in Tokyo run by an American gangster, played by Ryan. Some familiar faces turn up: Sessue Hayakawa plays the police inspector assigned to the case (note: he is dubbed in English), DeForest Kelly has a small part. Cameron Mitchell and Brad Dexter are part of the gang. The female lead, Yoshiko Yamaguchi, had an extensive career in Japan and China but only appeared in a couple of American films playing similar roles - a Japanese wife to an American soldier. The film is most notable for its location work in and around Tokyo which, in 1955 had recovered from the war years but had not quite begun to intense development that arrived with the 60's and continues to this day.
