When casting the role of Baroness Elsa Schraeder, the filmmakers of The Sound Of Music considered Grace Kelly, Eva Gabor, Irene Worth, and Cyd Charisse for the role before casting Eleanor Parker. Parker, who Robert Wise had previously directed before on another film, had been Wise’s first choice for the role since the beginning of the casting process.

In his own words, “Eleanor Parker came to mind right away. I always liked and respected her for her beauty, and the range of her acting ability. We talked about some other people but Eleanor turned out to be the right choice.”
