Sometimes the holidays seem quieter than they should be

Sometimes the holidays seem quieter than they should be.

The lights are bright, the laughter is loud, and everything around me insists I should feel whole… but I don’t. Because you’re not here. You were the warmth in the winter, the softness in the noise, the presence that made these nights feel complete. I still find myself speaking to you in my mind, wishing you were beside me the way you always were. These holiday evenings feel heavier without the sound of your paws, without your gentle comfort, without that simple, steady joy you brought into every room.

I talk to you as though you never truly left, because my heart still doesn’t know how to live in a world where you’re gone. I say your name under my breath, picture you curled in your spot like you never moved away from it. I search for you in moments when happiness should come easily, but instead it catches in my chest — like a favorite song missing its most precious note. The truth is, celebrations feel different now. A part of my family is missing. You. And no amount of light or tradition can fill the space you once occupied so effortlessly.

So tonight, I send my love the only way I know — upward, carried through memories and quiet words. If love could fly, it would find you instantly. I hope wherever you rest, you feel it. I hope you know you were never “just a pet.” You were home. And even under the glow of the holidays, I’m still learning how to celebrate without the heartbeat that made this season whole.
