St. Michael's Church
St. Michael's Church was built in the second half of the 12th century, and was, as the name indicates, dedicated to the archangel Michael. According to the Bible, Michael is God's foremost angel, and he is strongly connected to the end times. Michael is mentioned in John's Revelation as the leader of God's army that will fight against the great dragon, i.e. the devil. Most St. Michael's churches were built on mountains and other high places, thus Tønsberg's St. Michael's Church follows that tradition. St. Michael's Church was a Romanesque cruciform church with a central tower, and was used as a royal chapel. The most famous St. Michael's shrine is Mont-St. Michel in Normandy, France.
