Valdisholm castle
The castle at Valdisholm was located approximately in the middle of the river Glomma in Norway. The view from the castle tower has been good.
The stone castle was approx. 800 square meters with a ring wall of gray stone and brick as well as a main tower, gate tower and a lower building.
The castle was built by Håkon Håkonsson in the first half of the 13th century, and is mentioned several times in the saga during the last phase of the civil war. The last we hear of it is duke Skule's campaign against the castle in 1240. After that, the castle may have played a role as an administrative center and control point in the area.
In royal documents, it appears that the castle has turned into a state prison under king Magnus the Lawmender, who ruled Norway from 1263-1280. The last preserved historical source that mentions Valdisholm is dated 1346.
Little can be found of the castle today, but the main image shows a computer animation of what it is thought the castle might have looked like in the Middle Ages.
