He was known as Jim Davis by the time of his first major screen role, which was opposite Bette Davis in the 1948 melodrama Winter Meeting, a lavish failure for which he was lambasted in the press as being too inexperienced to play the part properly. Terwijl juist deze tijd, waarin het licht langzaam langer wegblijft en de dagen zich vullen met koudere lucht. Je wilt gewoon even niets. Even niets moeten. Niemand (aan)horen. Gewoon even helemaal niets. Niets doen.

Dorothy Elizabeth Gish

D orothy Elizabeth Gish (March 11, 1898 – June 4, 1968) Dorothy and her sister Lillian Gish were major movie stars of the silent era. Dorothy also had great success on the stage, and was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. In Hearts of the World (1918), a film about World War I and the devastation of France, Dorothy found her first foothold, striking a personal hit in a comedy role that captured the essence of her sense of humor. As the “little disturber”, a street singer, her performance was the comic highlight of the film, and her characterization in this role catapulted her into a career as a star of comedy films. In 1920, her sister, Lillian, tried out as director of the movie "Remodeling her Husband" which starred James Rennie. While she was often overshadowed by her sister Lillian, she never let it show and maintained a positive relationship with her sibling. Her last silent film was "Madame Pompadour" (1927), and one talkie, "Wolves" (...

Son of an E.I. purser

Afbeelding
This charming miniature shows a mother and her two children holding a basket of fruit. It is inscribed in ink, ‘Son of an E.I. purser." E.I. stands for the East India Company. We can therefore assume that this miniature is of the wife of this purser and of his children. It is possible that the portrait was painted to send out to him in India. The child on the right is a girl, but the one on the left is probably a boy. Since Tudor times, small boys from better-off families had been dressed in their early years in exactly the same dresses as girls, often until the age of six. The process of ‘breeching’, when the boy shed his petticoats, was a proud family occasion. By 1800, when this portrait was painted, boys usually graduated out of dresses at about four years old. Chief Massasoit

Famous People You May Not Know- Chief Massasoit Massasoit was born in a Pokanoket village at the site of today's Rhode Island. His village was near a spring of water which is named after him. He was liked by seven leaders. In March 1621, a Native American named Samoset entered Plymouth Colony and said to the Pilgrims in English, "Welcome Englishmen". He had learned some words from the English fishermen and traders that had visited his tribe. He said he was sent by Massasoit, “the greatest leader of the country.” After a few days, Massasoit came in person and was received with great friendship. Massasoit's people had been seriously weakened by a series of epidemics and were vulnerable to attacks by the Narragansetts, and he formed an alliance with the colonists at Plymouth Colony for defense against them. It was through his assistance that the Plymouth Colony avoided starvation during the early years. When the Pilgrims decided to celebrate a bountiful harvest of Thanks...

Besef

Afbeelding

This piece is now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, England. Photo: Heini Schneebeli. "One might think that all major problems in Egyptian art history have been resolved and that scholars are now only concerned with details. Far from it. There is a whole category of works of art which are crying out for a thorough investigation. These are the so-called sculptors's trial pieces or models, such as the one illustrated here. They may be three-dimensional sculptures, usually royal busts, or two-dimensional plaques with a royal head, or the head of a goddess or a queen (it is difficult to distinguish between them) cut in fine relief. Others may have representations of other deities, animals or large individual hieroglyphs. The decoration may be on both sides of the plaque. Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn

Afbeelding
Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn at the ‘Bocca della VeritĆ ’ (Mouth of Truth) in Rome, Italy, in the scene that in my opinion made Audrey Hepburn a major star. The movie is William Wyler's American romantic comedy movie for Paramount Pictures, 'Roman Holiday' (1953), also starring Eddie Albert, British actors Hartley Power and Harcourt Williams, British actress Margaret Rawlings, German actor Hans Hinrich, and Italian actors and actresses Tullio Carminati, Paolo Carlini, Claudio Ermelli, Paola Borboni, Laura Solari, Alfredo Rizzo, and Gorella Gori. Gregory Peck wanted to play a joke on Audrey Hepburn and, shortly before filming began, Peck reported to director William Wyler that he would borrow a gag from the famous comedian Red Skelton: he would keep his hand hidden in his sleeve while pulling it out of the mouth of the sculpture in order to scare Audrey. Wyler agreed and did not tell Hepburn who, having recently learned about the legend of the Mouth of Truth, was really sc...

Comanches

Of the mounted Comanches on the Southern Great Plains, they were seen as the most accomplished horsemen by the noted American artist George Catlin. When he traveled with the U. S. First Dragoon Expedition in 1834, Catlin had done sketches of Comanche warriors, village life, and the capturing of wild horses by Comanches with their long ropes. Moreover, George Catlin had written about the dress of the Comanche women in the following manner: "gown or slip, that reaches from the chin quite down to the ankles, made of deer or elk skins; often garnished very prettily, and ornamented with long fringes of elks' teeth, which are fastened on them in rows, and are more highly valued than any other ornament they can put upon them."
