Mister Roberts (1955) Directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy, featuring an all-star cast, including Henry Fonda as Mister Roberts, James Cagney as Captain Morton, William Powell (in his final film appearance) as Doc and Jack Lemmon (Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner) as Ensign Pulver. Based on the 1946 novel and 1948 Broadway play. The film also earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Sound.

Thomas Heggen, the author of the original novel 'Mister Roberts,' based his novel on his World War II experiences as a US Navy lieutenant aboard the USS Virgo.
In Henry Fonda's 1982 autobiography, he praised the novel, film and the play. It was William Powell's final film and final acting appearance, although he lived nearly another 30 years, dying at age 91 in 1984. The film was James Cagney's last film for Warner Bros., the studio that had propelled him to stardom in the 1930s and under which he had spent the majority of his career under contract.
