HERE COMES MR. JORDAN
"HERE COMES MR. JORDAN" (1941)
This comical fantasy film is, as the poster advertises, "daring, different and delightful!" It stars Robert Montgomery, Claude Rains, Evelyn Keyes, Edward Everett Horton, Rita Johnson and James Gleason. They all do a wonderful job. It is wonderful, and unique screenplay, which was adapted from the book "Heaven Can Wait." I first watched it when I was a young girl and was totally enthralled with it and all of the "magic" it contained. It is definitely worth the watch! It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won 2 for "Best Writing / Screenplay" and "Best Writing / Original Story" for which it is included in the schedule. It was nominated for 3 awards by the National Board of Review and won all 3, in the categories of "Top Ten Films of The Year," Best Acting" for James Gleason (who shared the award with the winner from "Meet John Doe") and "Best Acting" for Robert Montgomery (who shared his with the winner from "Rage In Heaven"). Robert Montgomery was also nominated for an NYFCC Award for "Best Actor", which he tied for with Cary Grant for "Penny Serenade." It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was remade in 1978, under the title "Heaven Can Wait." That movie starred Warren Beatty, Buck Henry, Julie Christie, Dyann Cannon, Jack Warden, James Mason, Charles Grodin and Vincent Gardenia. I have to admit, as much as I love the original, that I prefer the remake.
SYNOPSIS: "Boxer Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery) is killed in a plane crash on the way to a championship fight. Unfortunately, Joe wasn't supposed to die and is brought up to heaven too soon by an overeager angel (Edward Everett Horton). The angel's boss, Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains), sends Joe back to earth in the body of a murdered playboy to straighten out his life and resume his boxing career. Along the way, he meets an idealistic young woman (Evelyn Keyes) and falls head over heels in love."
