THE BOY IN THE PICTURE
THE BOY IN THE PICTURE
The Titanic was one of the biggest stories of the last century, and has captured the imagination of generations of people since.
Shortly after news of the Titanic’s fate reached shore, one of the most iconic images associated with the disaster, was taken.
It's now one of the most powerful images of the disaster.
A young newsboy outside the White Star Line offices, is holding an 'Evening News' poster.
The headline reads:
"Titanic Disaster Great Loss of Life".
That boy was sixteen year old Ned Parfett.
Sadly, Ned's short life and death is just as tragic as the Titanic.
Four years after the famous picture was taken, Ned enlisted in the army and soon found himself embroiled in the hellish trenches of the Great War.
Two and a half years later, twenty two year old Ned was killed while serving with the British army in France.
It was just days before the the guns fell silent on the armistice.
.
Ned was killed on 29th October 1918, near Valenciennes.
Ned was due to go on leave, and collecting some clothes from the quartermasters store.
While he was there, an enemy shell hit the building, and Ned was one of those killed.
It was less than two weeks before the end of the war.
Ned is buried in the British war cemetery at Verchain-Maugré, in France.
For Ned’s service to the king, he was awarded the Military medal for bravery.
